Sport motion capture system (SMC) (9.30hr)

Project description

Developing a software solution for SMC (Sport motion caption) to improve BMX sport by tracking the movements of athletes. This software system uses Unity3D and integrates the movement of BMX cyclists In this virtual environment. Use is made of UWB (Pozyx), but other sensors (e.g. IMU) can also be added to improve the sports analysis and / or experience.

Assume the existing Pozyx system on Area 51 (32 beacons). The first step is to restore /
rebuild the existing software with the new Pozyx hardware and to determine to what extent with the new hardware everything still communicates well with each other, to define a regression test to further develop the system

Context

Area51 is an indoor urban sports in Eindhoven. Urban Sports Performance Center (USPC) is interested in professionalizing urban sports through the use of new knowledge, technology and innovation.

As modern-day sports consumption evolves, the spectator demands more from an sports venue. The integration of sports data to drive the fan experience can play a huge role.
By adding data into an sport and visualizing jump on big screens, imagine fans seeing riders statistics on the big screen, highlighting potential missed or achieved angles through the use of data.
This will have the protentional to boost event satisfaction and revisit intention.

Urban sports athletes are judged on factors that are not measured, such as flow and style. providing insights to judges this would have a protentional beneficial impact.

Results

The team has developed a tracking system for Area 51 that can run on both tablets and computers. The system is designed to be as expandable as possible, which means other types of sensors, new methods of transferring data, and new data formats can all be added with ease.

The new system can display data from real-time sources, CSV files and JSON files. The group has decoupled the functionality into 2 separate parts: a library (which can be loaded into any program), and 2 user interfaces (one for testing, and one for use by the end-user).

About the project group

The project ran with four FHICT-T students as a semester project. It ran for 16 weeks where effective work per week was 12 hours.

We learned a lot doing this assignment where knowledge about system design, UML and communication systems where greatly improved.
