Project description
During this semester we worked on the NEPTARGOS project. Tilburg University describes the project as follows:
The NEPTARGOS project is an interdisciplinary project involving universities, civil society organizations, research institutes, and businesses, both large and small. Its goal is to improve knowledge and understanding of cybersecurity related to the critical infrastructure of the North Sea, thereby enhancing the safety and resilience of modern cyber-physical systems in this maritime environment.
We chose to research AIS-data transmission. During this semester we went through different phases regarding the environment. We started out by setting up a digital environment, but later on decided to go the physical route.
Context
As stated before this project consists of different sectors, the main parts are the maritime sector, as NEPTARGOS covers the maritime sector. During the semester we combined this with Cyber Security, assessing security risks and testing different types of attacks.
Results
We managed to setup a physical environment with two ESP32s and radio modules. The MQTT server is sending different ship data to the first ESP, which serves as a ship. Then this ship ESP sends the data to the coast. The coast is responsible for generating an overview of all ships of which it receives data, it will do this by plotting the ships on a map. To visualize this we used Signal K.
About the project group
We worked on this project during the entire semester, for this project a total of two days was scheduled for each week. The project was divided in several sprints, in which we reviewed what we did, and set the direction for next sprint.
