Smart Systems Lab officieel geopend bij Fontys ICT
Fontys ICT has a new learning environment: the Smart Systems Lab. On Thursday, January 22, the lab was officially opened by Fontys director Joep Houterman. Students, colleagues, and partners came together to officially inaugurate this innovative learning space.
Learning in a real mini-factory
When you walk into the Smart Systems Lab, you feel like you are in a modern factory rather than a classroom. Robots, sensors, AI cameras, and production lines form a single entity here. The lab is set up as a mini-factory, where students work with the same technologies used in the business world.
The lab does not contain a theoretical model, but a real production line. Students start with individual components and build a fully automated process step by step. They learn how to use data, automation, and artificial intelligence (AI) to make systems smarter, more efficient, and more sustainable.
Collaborating on Smart Industry
The Smart Systems Lab is a new learning environment within the Fontys ICT InnovationLab. It is a place where education, research, and practice come together. Students, teachers, and companies work together on Smart Industry: the smart use of digital technology to improve industrial processes.
Complete production processes are simulated in the lab, without companies having to shut down their own production. This makes it possible to experiment, analyze data, and develop innovative solutions.
This makes it possible to experiment, analyze data, and develop innovative solutions for real-world problems.
Amy Latour, research manager for High Tech Embedded Software (HTES) at Fontys: “In this lab, students work together with companies on technologies for the future. We make data visible and look for ways to make processes smarter and more sustainable, including with the help of AI.”
Bridge between education and business
With the Smart Systems Lab, Fontys ICT wants to teach students not only how technology works, but above all what you can do with it in practice. By collaborating with companies, students gain experience with realistic cases and current technological challenges.
The lab is therefore not only a learning environment, but also a meeting place for education, research, and the professional field. It is a place where innovation is central and where new ideas can be tested and applied immediately.
Official opening
The official opening by Joep Houterman marks the start of a new phase in practice-oriented education within Fontys ICT. During the opening, the importance of collaboration between study programs, research groups, and companies was emphasized. The Smart Systems Lab is the result of months of collaboration between colleagues from Fontys ICT and Fontys Engineering and demonstrates how education and technology can reinforce each other.
