The WildlifeNL project originated from an NWO application via the consortium route under the title: “The Dutch Wildlife Comeback: Dynamic co-management of human-wildlife interactions in the Netherlands (WildlifeNL)”. A large partner network is involved in the project, which takes a fresh look at the relationship between humans and animals and the importance (and preservation) of biodiversity. Our current approach to wildlife management raises many questions, but also causes friction among those who bear the burden of policy choices. Think, for example, of people living near nature reserves, such as livestock farmers who see wolves as a threat.
The project's approach is that smart technology can play an important role in this. It can help us change our perspective on wildlife management, provide insight, and create opportunities for new ways to avoid conflicts. Technology may also help us better understand animal behaviour, what motivates it, and what patterns exist. These insights can be crucial for better policy-making.
