Project description
Federated Learning is still relatively new and often hard to explain to people without a technical background. Our challenge was to design a clear and engaging way to introduce FL and showcase student projects in this field. We collaborated with Fontys and Odisee’s AI research teams to better understand FL use cases, frameworks, and communication barriers. The final goal was to create digital tools that could support public understanding, student engagement, and academic outreach.
Context
This project is part of the Art-IE research initiative focused on applying Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). Our domain is AI Education & Knowledge Sharing, with a focus on Federated Learning (FL) - a technique that trains AI models on local devices while preserving data privacy.

Our project delivered two connected outcomes:
1. A 2 - 3 minute explainer video that answers “What is Federated Learning?” using simple visuals and voiceover. The video introduces FL through relatable examples and step-by-step storytelling. It is designed for students, SMEs, and educational events.
2. A full project website that explains FL in more detail and showcases student work. The site includes:
- Diagrams of the FL workflow
- Use case highlights
- Student posters and research outcomes
- Tools and links for further learning
Both products were developed iteratively, tested with stakeholders, and improved based on feedback. Stakeholders confirmed the value of both tools for educational events and internal training.
The combination of clear visual storytelling and an interactive website creates a bridge between research, education, and practice - helping make advanced AI topics more approachable and useful for students, SMEs, and researchers alike.
About the project group
We are two 6th semester ICT & Media Design students from Fontys: Desislava, with a focus on video production, and Khoa Dang Nguyen, with a background in front-end development. We followed an iterative design process, collaborated closely with stakeholders, and aligned regularly to ensure progress.
