Project description
When a serious traffic accident happens, the traffic team from the forensic research department of the police goes to the scene to investigate the accident. A lot of data is gathered to analyse, after which an official report is made and taken to the public prosecutor.
For every case, it takes the researchers a lot of time to sort and process the data before the official report can be made. The forensic research department is looking for an ICT-solution to improve the efficiency of their research process.
The goal of this project is to create a proof-of-concept of an application that can help the forensic research department with more efficient information processing.
Context
The traffic team in the forensic research department of the police gets called to investigate traffic accidents with serious or deadly injuries. The traffic team goes to the accident scene and gathers a lot of information: images, videos, GPS data, tire tracks and more. All of this data is analysed to find out exactly what happened during the accident. Based on the research results, an official report is made and taken to the public prosecutor.
A lot of different software programs are used during the research of a case, which makes the research process more complex and time-consuming. Currently, the forensic research department does not have a central point where the forensic researchers can get an overview of a case. All the work is done manually, and the forensic researchers have to select the data needed for the research and for the official report by hand.
Results
The result of this project is a viable proof-of-concept for the traffic team in the forensic research department of the police. Our team has developed an application that can become the center of operations during a case, where all the data can be displayed in a clear overview per case. The application also has additional functionalities that can support the forensic researchers in their research process.
