Project description
Robot Swarm is about building small robots that behave like pets. They wander the hallways of the Fontys ICT building on their own, react to students and teachers, and drive back to their charging station when their battery runs low. Just like an animal going to eat. The goal is for the robots to feel alive, not mechanical. The robots are meant to be fun to run into, not scary or annoying. Think of them as small, curious creatures that just happen to live in the school
Context
Within Fontys we want to add a new fun interaction, something that makes students and teachers smile when they walk through the door. Not a screen. Not an app. Something physical and unexpected.
There is also a technical angle: this project gives students a real problem to solve. Autonomous navigation, battery management, and safe operation in a public space are hard challenges.
Results
The primary outcome of this project is a functional, physical prototype capable of autonomous navigation and dynamic environment mapping. We successfully engineered the core robotics systems, enabling the unit to independently drive through the school hallways while generating and updating a map of its surroundings in real-time.
