Project description
The main challenge of this project was to transform the large amount of project data available within the Fontys ICT InnovationLab into meaningful and accessible insights. With over 900 student innovation projects, valuable information was difficult to search, analyze, and use for decision-making.
Our goal was to explore how dashboards, data processing, and AI-powered search functionality could improve access to project information and provide insights into students, partners, technologies, and project trends. By doing so, we aimed to support both operational processes and strategic decision-making within the InnovationLab.
Context
The project was carried out within the Fontys ICT InnovationLab, a hybrid learning environment where students, researchers, and industry partners collaborate on innovation challenges. Over the years, the InnovationLab has accumulated a large collection of student project data covering various technologies, domains, and partner organizations.
The project is situated in the fields of data analytics, business intelligence, and artificial intelligence, with a focus on improving access to project information and generating insights that support students, partners, researchers, and management. By making project data more accessible and actionable, the InnovationLab can better showcase its impact, identify trends, and support future decision-making.
Results
The project resulted in several practical solutions that improve access to and understanding of InnovationLab project data. First, we developed an interactive Power BI dashboard that provides insights into student projects, partners, technologies, and project trends. The dashboard allows stakeholders to explore data more efficiently and supports data-driven decision-making.
In addition, we developed an AI-powered chatbot that enables users to search and explore project information using natural language queries. This makes project data more accessible for students, staff, and external partners without requiring technical knowledge of the underlying dataset.
To support these solutions, we designed and implemented a data processing workflow that transforms project data into a structured format that can be used by the Power BI dashboard. Validation sessions with stakeholders confirmed that the dashboard and chatbot address existing challenges regarding data accessibility and searchability. The developed solutions demonstrate technical feasibility in a real-world environment and provide a foundation for further development within the InnovationLab ecosystem.
