Alzheimer Support Chatbot: Digital Support for Carers

Carers who look after a loved one with Alzheimer’s on a daily basis face both emotional and practical challenges. The student project ‘Alzheimer Support Chatbot’ aims to ease this burden by developing a digital application that provides reliable information, daily guidance and empathetic support. The chatbot serves as an accessible first point of contact for anyone involved in caring for people with Alzheimer’s, helping users to better cope with symptoms, behavioural changes and complex care situations.

The application is designed for people caring for a family member with Alzheimer’s or dementia. The biggest challenge lay in providing personalised and relevant support without contravening GDPR legislation. Consequently, the chatbot was developed within a strict privacy framework, carefully defining which information may and may not be processed. The research focused on how meaningful guidance can be provided without storing or sharing sensitive data.

A reliable and user-friendly application
The project resulted in a fully functional application, consisting of a user-friendly website and an AI chatbot running on a dedicated server. The software is automatically tested and updated, ensuring that errors are quickly detected and improvements can be implemented immediately. A secure login system has been added to determine who has access to which sections, and the system’s operation is continuously monitored. In addition, comprehensive documentation has been drawn up to clarify how the application works and how it complies with privacy legislation.

A solid foundation for further development
With this project, the student team developed a reliable, secure and accessible digital support tool for informal carers. Through a combination of careful privacy research and a solid technical foundation, the Alzheimer Support Chatbot offers a valuable addition to the daily care of people with Alzheimer’s.
