Would you like to create visual productions using high-end technology? Here’s your chance
In 2023, Pixel Playground VideoLab opened at Fontys ICT: a creative hub for Virtual Production, XR applications and innovative media. The space features an impressive LED video wall over 9 metres wide, allowing students to experiment directly with digital worlds and real-time productions. The technology is comparable to that used in professional studios, giving students the opportunity to develop and test 2D and 3D visuals at a high level. This makes it an ideal environment for students to explore the intersection of technology and creativity in a hands-on way. In this environment, technology and creativity flow seamlessly into one another. Unlike many similar spaces, the VideoLab is fully embedded in education, ensuring it is used primarily for learning, experimentation and student projects.
Virtual Production makes it possible to bring any conceivable environment to life. From futuristic cities and desert landscapes to scenes on other planets; everything can be created virtually. Major Hollywood productions such as The Mandalorian use similar techniques to replace complex sets with real-time digital backgrounds.
Learning in a film studio
In the videolab, named the Pixel Playground, students work on a wide range of visual projects, such as short films, virtual sets and other audiovisual productions. They learn how to build a digital world, combine lighting and camera work in real time, and apply visual effects instantly. This turns learning into a genuine experience on a film set. Within this educational setting, students are encouraged to experiment freely and apply new techniques in practice. At Fontys ICT, this kind of hands-on experience is central, giving students the opportunity to work with cutting-edge technology throughout their studies.
A great example is the rap video by students from the Fontys Rock Academy. They brought the Colosseum in Rome to life as a virtual backdrop, complete with realistic lighting and moving cameras; as if they were standing right in the middle of the Italian capital.
Josh Reuther, lecturer and one of the coordinators of the VideoLab, sees the VideoLab primarily as a place where students can experiment freely. “In the Pixel Playground, students immediately experience the results of their creative choices. That direct feedback is incredibly valuable.”
Get started with Virtual Production yourself
Interested in studying and working with cutting-edge technology in a creative environment? At Fontys ICT, you’ll have the opportunity to learn by doing and gain hands-on experience in facilities like the Pixel Playground VideoLab.
For students who want to deepen their skills in Virtual Production, Fontys ICT offers opportunities to specialise further. You can learn more about this during events such as the minor market and minor information sessions, where we’ll tell you everything about the Virtual Production minor.
And that’s why you’ll also find us at this year’s The Art Department in Eindhoven (15-17 April), where we’ll be showcasing our work and highlighting how Fontys ICT uses Virtual Production in education and creative projects. Visitors can dive in and experience it themselves through a compact mini setup — experimenting with virtual production using a tracker and camera.
Minor Virtual Production at Fontys
