Project description
AI Nutrition is a web application that recommends meals based on your goals, dietary restrictions, and how much you care about sustainability. It scores recipes for both nutrition fit and environmental impact, lets you save and plan meals across a week, and includes a nutrition chatbot that answers from real research and your own profile.
Context
Food systems cause around a third of global greenhouse gas emissions, but most nutrition apps focus only on calories. AI Nutrition combines health and sustainability into one recommendation so users can see the trade-off and adjust how much weight sustainability gets. Sustainability scores are grounded in two peer-reviewed sources (Poore & Nemecek - 2018 paper for carbon, Hoekstra & Mekonnen - 2012 paper for water), and the chatbot is grounded in research documents and the user's profile rather than open-ended LLM output. The project sits inside the Future Food research direction at Fontys ICT.
Results
A working, deployed web app where users can register, build a profile, get ranked meal recommendations, save and plan meals, and chat with a nutrition assistant grounded in project data. Three sustainability modes let users control how much eco-impact influences the ranking. The chatbot uses a domain scope gate to block off-topic questions before they reach the LLM.
About the project group
This project was developed as part of the Future Food research initiative at Fontys ICT. The wider Future Food team includes contributions on the chatbot logic, calorie estimation, and the user-facing recommendation system.
