Fontys Multidisciplinary Student Project: Green Cloud GPS

Last year, Sue developed a project idea to submit to Fontys ICT. Instead of a traditional research project, we opted to set up a multidisciplinary project in which students from the AI, Infrastructure and Software study programmes would work together and combine their expertise.

The result is the ‘Green Cloud GPS’ project: a unique initiative by Fontys ICT and Sue, focused on a socially relevant issue. In this project, students are developing an advanced labelling system for cloud workloads. This involves looking at the actual source of the energy used by data centres. By using live weather data, information about energy sources and smart AI models, the students can predict how much green energy is available at any given moment.

This multidisciplinary approach brings together students from different fields. While AI students build predictive models for green energy, infrastructure students analyse the technology behind data centres and how they can use it. Software students then integrate all these components. This collaboration results in innovative solutions that are both technically and socially impactful.

For Sue, this project is a logical next step after various collaborations with individual study programmes at Fontys ICT. With Green Cloud GPS, we demonstrate our commitment by actively collaborating with students and investing in the development of sustainable technologies for the cloud sector. In this way, we contribute to a greener digital future and offer students the opportunity to work on current challenges in a practical, multidisciplinary manner and in close collaboration with the business community!
